Wolfdog Training Tips by Megan Lindsay

What works for one wolfdog may not work for all, but here are a few ideas and training methods that have been found successful.

Content Counts

The amount of wolf content in an animal often makes a difference in behavior. A lower content wolfdog might be much easier to train or be more obedient than a higher content.

Generally, higher content wolfdogs are much more aloof and shy, and great amounts of socialization are required for them to be comfortable in new situations or around new people. They do not make good guard dogs due to this non-confrontational and shy personality.

Positive vs. Negative Reinforcement

Wolfdogs tend to respond VERY well to positive reinforcement. By using positive methods and praise to teach, your animal will be more cooperative when it comes to training.

Negative reinforcement will make a canine unhappy and less likely to want to participate in training due to fear. This also creates distrust between the handler and animal. Controlling a canine through fear is not being in control of your animal.

A fair and trustworthy master and a mutual respected relationship is necessary for a well-behaved, well-trained, and well-adjusted animal.

Rewards

In general, wolfdogs are highly intelligent animals and will learn commands quickly, however they are very stubborn and may choose to ignore the given command unless there is something in it for them (i.e. treats).

Consistency and reinforcement is key!
