Wolfdog Health: Summertime Fly Prevention

Summertime biting flies and mosquitoes can be irritating, even when the best of products are applied to repel them.

Not all flies bite. Many flies feed off the blood and feces left by biting flies and other insects, so they can further irritate animals even though you’re taking topical measures to deter biters.

The article below is a great overview of how the different types of flies in your area can affect your outdoor dog, and the different ways to keep fly populations down.

Quick Tips:

  • Keep pet areas clean of garbage and debris.
  • Remove pet waste regularly.
  • Keep grass cut around your pet’s favored areas.
  • Take measures to remove standing water, in either buckets or fill low drainage areas.
  • Groom regularly to remove food or other attractants.
  • Keep irritated areas on pets clean and apply soothing salves recommended by a vet.
  • Inspect pets for wounds, sores and skin irritations regularly.
